Data governance is the specification of decision rights and an accountability framework to ensure the appropriate behavior in the valuation, creation, consumption and control of data and analytics.

Why Health Data Governance?

The advancement of healthcare will increasingly depend on the use of health data and collaboration with government, non-profit, and commercial institutions. Technological advances driving the use of health data have gotten ahead of the regulatory and legal framework, demanding the establishment of and reliance on guiding principles, standards, practices, roles and responsibilities, and other processes governing the use of health data.

Guiding Principles

Aligning with the priorities set forth in the University of California Health Data Governance Report, decision-making governing the use of health data will rely on the following principles:

  • Attention to the University’s Unique Responsibility and Mission
  • Justice
  • Active Stewardship
  • Trustworthiness and Patient Engagement
  • Sharing Data Outside UC for Public Benefit
  • Promoting Alignment and Collaboration
